Title: If You Give A Pig A Pancake Lesson
Lesson Outline
Common Core Standards:
Reading Standards for Literature- Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson; Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
Speaking and Listening Standards- Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
Student Learning Objective(s):
By the end of the lesson students will be able to feel confident recording their voices and reading a prepared script on a VoiceThread, they will be able to complete the “p” word sorting activity with 100% accuracy, and the students will understand the basics of cause and effect.
Assessment:
The students will be informally assessed before they record each page on the VoiceThread by listening to them practice, the teacher does this is order to make sure the recordings will be successful. The students will also be formally assessed during the “p” word sorting smartboard activity.
Materials and Resources:
Initiation:
To begin, the students will be given an introduction to the book “If You Give A Pig A Pancake”. They will talk about the author and if they have read any other stories by her. Then, the story will be read through to the students once. After reading, there will be a discussion on what happened and they will be introduced to cause and effect and how it appears in the story. The teacher will explain that they will be making a video, and doing a craft to motivate them to get actively involved with the story.
Lesson Development:
Closure: To end the lesson, the teacher will ask students to explain cause and effect, what a VoiceThread video is, and their pig crafts will be hung on the wall. This time will allow the children to discuss with the teacher and their peers what they liked about the story. They will be given a “take-home” sheet with the VoiceThread link to show their parents. Also, at this time the students will ask any questions they have.

- Construction paper
- Makers
- Glue

- Worksheet on cause and effect

To begin, the students will be given an introduction to the book “If You Give A Pig A Pancake”. They will talk about the author and if they have read any other stories by her. Then, the story will be read through to the students once. After reading, there will be a discussion on what happened and they will be introduced to cause and effect and how it appears in the story. Lesson Development:
- The students will be read the book “If You Give A Pig A Pancake”.
- The students will discuss the story and be introduced to cause and effect. The teacher will begin demonstating the explanation by starting off on page one and showing the cause was giving the pig a pancake, and the effect was the pig needed syrup. They will discuss all examples are preceding pages.
- The students will hear the book again, now that they have an understand of cause and effect; this time they will hear the story read from a youtube video reading. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ccmzK0FkVQ )
- The students will then each be giving a photocopied page from the story. One or two students will be given a specific page so that the entire book’s pages are distributed throughout the class. They will be asked to silently, or with their partner, read their page.
- Once the students have read, the class (who is familiar with the smartboard and also with VoiceThread) will be told they are going to make a VoiceThread video reading the pages they were given.
- The students will practice reading their page.
- The VoiceThread video on the smartboard and computer will be made.
- The students will play and view the finished product and be give the link to send home to parents and guardians to view the VoiceThread.
- After the video, the students will do another activity with the smartboard in which they will sort “p” words into the correct letter category. This will only have about 8-10 minutes. See notebook attachment.*/uploads/1/4/6/7/14679276/p_and_m_words.notebook
- Lastly, the students will do a craft for fun, making a pig face with pink construction paper.
- For homework, they will be given a worksheet on cause and effect relating to the book and will be encouraged to show their families the VoiceThread video made.
